About
My husband and me at Ocean Beach
Who I am
Hi! I’m Evan. I was born and raised in the Greater Cincinnati Area where I spent much of my childhood, outside, learning about the fossils, geology, plants, and animals of the Ohio River Valley. I blame and thank my childhood for instilling in me an indelible interest in exploring the beauty and mysteries of the natural world.
I got my bachelor’s in biology from Miami University, where I also dabbled in neuroscience, computer science, and bioinformatics, but environmental science has always had my heart. Shortly before graduating with my bachelor’s, I applied and was accepted into a PhD program for environmental biology (wherein I would’ve focused on bioremediation research in eastern deciduous forests).
But, my husband got a job that was pulling us out to San Francisco and I decided to decline the offer. We moved out here in May 2025, just weeks after I graduated. I was unemployed from then until about the start of 2026, when I started a tech-adjacent marketing job. My goal is to, somehow, get back into environmental science proper, whether through a job or grad school, in the next year or two or three.
That was a relevant introduction if you’re interested in reading the “Science” part of this blog. But there is more to me than that!
I also like to think and write about a wide variety of other things. There’s nothing I love more than to go down random rabbit holes, and I have a wide range of hobbies, from mudlarking to maritime history to poetry. Until now, almost all of my writing has been on notebook paper, and has included everything from short stories to essays to thoughts on random goings-on in my day-to-day life. My goal is to publish that stuff here from now on, and that will be what you’ll find under the “Random Thoughts” part of this blog.
What you will find under “Science”
- My thoughts on EnvSci articles, research, topics, & issues
- My ideas for future EnvSci research & experiments
- Blog posts about my progress on EnvSci-related coding projects (if I ever get around to it!)
- (Potentially) Non-EnvSci science stuff that interests me
What you will find under “Random Thoughts”
- Random thoughts, ideas, musings, etc.
- Essays & blog posts unrelated to science
- Maybe even some art, eventually (e.g. poetry, drawings, comics)
Why this website exists
- To participate in & contribute to the EnvSci–and broader scientific–community while I’m still employed in a different field
- To explore areas of research to potentially pursue in grad school
- To share my thoughts, in a relatively coherent manner, with friends & family I don’t get to talk to on a daily basis
- For my future self
- For anyone out there interested in the things I write about :)
Thanks for reading!
